The Jezebel editor who sent me hate e-mail because I thought her defense of using the words “nigger” and “faggot” was unacceptable is a racist? Shocker.

First of all, I don’t send “hate email.” I may get flippant or terse or maybe slightly cunty, but never hateful. Because you have to care a lot to hate something. And I tend to be apathetic about a lot of things. This person is either outright lying or being an extreme drama queen.
If you don’t like what I write, that’s fine. If you don’t like the way I look, that’s fine. If you don’t agree with my opinions, that’s fine. If you hate me—even if you’ve never met me—that’s fine, too. I understand.
Look, I know I can be abrasive or divisive and I’ve definitely put my foot in my mouth and talked out of my ass on more than one occasion. But I am neither a bigot nor a racist. That post I wrote on my old website (which is no longer up), using the words “nigger” and “faggot,” was not a defense of hate speech, but rather, a part of something that I wrote about language and context. (I personally believe that words are words and should be used as such. I hate “n-word” or “c-word” or whatever. This isn’t network TV, it’s the fucking Internet. Say the fucking word, motherfucker.) The irony is that what I said was taken completely out of context.
My point then, and now, is that people can say whatever they want. But just because you say something, it doesn’t make it true. So don’t lie about me to play a part in some bullshit Tumblr circle jerk.
